Facebook and MySpace Go Tribal June 27, 2007

Loving apophenia’s post on ‘Viewing American class divisions through Facebook and MySpace‘.  Is this the start of software as a hangout?  As per previous posts there is abundance in functionality – functionality is not the competitive edge anymore, is the competitive edge now about what tribes become associated with your sites?

Previously we have compared social networking sites like comparing Firefox vs IE – both are suitable for every consumer and if enough time and effort were placed into marketing we would all use whichever was chosen to be marketed to us. People used frienster, they then used MySpace and will probably all move over to Facebook right?  Probably wrong.

Apophenia’s data shows us that the social networking sites battle is not the usual software maketing model but more like marketing a brand or a hang out particular to certain demographics / tribes.  Are we now in the more mature marketing space with social networking where we have to admit that we cannot please all with our sites and have to focus on particular groups and give up on others?  Or is it still possible to market this stuff like Coca-Cola?

Despite the tough questions that will shape the future of social networking there is still an enormous opportunity for some form of integration tool where we can take our data with us to several sites.
