Wow that was a blogging break!

Caught a great book recently that I’d like to share; ‘Fooled by Randomness‘ its a little old so I’m probably on the long tail with respect to this one but it has so many gems I had to recommend it.  Nassim Nicholas Taleb brings us some classic concepts well deployed; amongst these my favourites are:

1. Wittgenstein’s Ruler – Unless you have confidence in the ruler’s reliability, if you use a ruler to measure a table you may also be using the table to measure the ruler…

2. Burridan’s Donkey - Imagine a donkey equally hungry and thirsty placed at exactly equal distance from sources of food and water.  In such a framework the donkey would die of thirst and hunger as he would be unable to decide which one to get first.  Now inject some randomness and nudge the donkey slightly closer to one and the impasse is broken.
