Keeping up with the Jones’s January 1, 2008

Umberto Eco posited the differential between the books of the middle ages to the media of the 20th century on the basis of whether we look up to our heroes or down on our soap opera favourites. Where does that leave us with the move from fiction to reality as our media involves our network of friends?
Great interview with Umberto Eco in the Guardian recently that got me thinking… Umberto noted that in transitioning from the likes of the bible and homeric texts to TV we have made the move from looking up to our heroes and worrying about our shortfalls to looking down on our TV comedy characters and feeling pretty good.
What space then does the move into reality based media hold? Also this is more and more not arms length reality media but involving our network of friends on facebook and myspace. Does this again hold some anthropological basis?
Its fair to say that ‘one-uppmanship’ is alive and well on most social networking sites as we see avatar shots and site pics establishing socioeconomic status – maybe we still do need to feel the need to establish at least equality with those close to us in our networks?
Also most circles at least link remotely to ‘heroes’; those top names in their respective fields to be aimed for in biblical parody.
Is this internet social connectivity thing converging Umberto’s original distinction and is it all down to anthropology at the end of the day?
